Features from the January ’10 issue of Branching Out:

 

  • Summary of 2009 activities: Board expansion, member total growing past 350, new Provisional Phase One startup plan, repeated support for 2010 from local foundations and renewing members.
  • Surviving a year of deep recession in the black.
  • Some of the "quiet helpers" who enable HBG to carry on and to move forward: Quest, Inc.--mail processing, Arts Interface--marketing support, Ohio Technology Group--IT services, PRIDE--planting and cleanup, Harvey Harris, CPA--fiscal compliance.

Other Recent Events and Activities

  • Initiation of Capital account for major gifts and grants (December 2009) and Endowment fund for long-term maintenance of the future Garden (January 2010).
  • Planting of 4500 tulip bulbs by PRIDE group and other HBG volunteers in preparation for 2010 Bulb Festival (Fall 2009)
  • Completion of Provisional Phase One interim startup plan by NBBJ (July 2009).
  • Completion of Level One environmental analysis on Southeastern Triangle section (Phase Seven of Master Plan.
  • Planting of 7000 supplemental bulbs by HBG volunteers in preparation for 2009 Bulb Festival (Fall 2008).
  • Clearance of invasive undergrowth from one-third of the Garden site by Boy Scout Troop 6 and the PRIDE group-- County Sheriff's Office (May - July 2008)
  • Ongoing administrative improvements through 2009, including implementation of GiftWorks member management package, membership in GrantStation search service, purchase of laptop to begin organized grant searching, etc.
  • Season of Herbs luncheon (August 2008).  See separate  section under Events/Newsletter (left-hand menu).
  • April '08 Bulb Festival, preceded by volunteer planting of 10,000 supplemental bulbs in Fall 2007.
  •  
    Indoor Bulb Growing workshop (February '08 and '09: 39 people have enrolled for this informative and fun program.
  • 2007-09 PowerPoint show developed; presented to more than 25 community groups.
  • meeting of Garden neighborhood residents (November ’07)
  • 2006-09: engagement of Community Leadership Academy and Wittenberg interns and a growing group of volunteers.  Also several collaborations with other community organizations.  These include the committee for a 2010 Springfield entry in the America in Bloom civic beautification competition, the OSU Extension Center's Garden Jubilee, the Springfield Museum of Art's New Botanicals exhibit, Project Jericho (school-age children's enrichment program), and others.
