 Provisional Phase One

The Master Plan for building the Garden consists of seven Phases and carries a construction estimate of $7.1 million.  Phase One, the central section, is the most expensive, at $2.4 million.

Everyone knows how difficult the global recession has been, particularly for non-profits.  We don’t want this circumstance to delay the start of our Garden indefinitely.  We are committed to establishing a visible development at the Garden site.  Something modest but attractive, useful, and attainable even in a period of restricted funding.  And something requiring minimal maintenance.  The answer is Provisional Phase One (PP1), ticketed at $850,000.

The details of the plans are:

  • In place of the elaborate Visitors Center of the Master Plan, an open shelter and adjacent service building—with real restrooms!  (No more Port-a-Jon’s for the Bulb Festival.)
  • An attractive setting for HBG events and other community events, including the open area south of the shelter.
  • Space for selected plantings and other display items.
  • A security fence around the PP1 area.
  • Clearance of scrub vegetation throughout the entire site, creating an open view.
  • The Bike Path remaining undisturbed.  In the Master Plan it is shifted south to the margin of Buck Creek.
  • Gateway constructions at the Water Street and Sherman Avenue entrances that announce HBG and make our project more visible.
  • An endowment factor to provide for maintenance of the PP1 area.
The HBG Board is currently reviewing the plan for such details as parking, visibility, a possible pathway to the creek to serve canoeists and kayakers (Buck Creek Navigability and Whitewater project), and service to users of the Bike Path.  We will post the results as soon as they are available.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.  Not to mention donations to help us move the PP1 plan forward.
